An “off–on” fluorescent nanosensor based on nitrogen-doped carbon nanodots (N-CNDs) for the sensitive and selective detection of caspase-3 activity, a key apoptosis executor, exhibits high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and robust performance in complex biological media.
