Abstract
Single crystals of pure zinc were examined using instrumented spherical indentation on the basal-oriented surface at three different loading rates. The residual impressions and the surrounding surface were investigated using atomic force microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction in order to reveal information about the topography and orientation changes. Noticeable pop-ins were reproducible in the majority of the tests. Contrary to reports in the literature, the pop-in initiation load and loading rates were found to have an inverse relationship, and this behaviour was attributed to twinning deformation and dislocation movement. In tests with all loading rates, evidence of twinning could be found both within and outside of the imprints. Residual impressions composed of slip and twin ‘subgrains’ and external twins manifested as sink-in patterns were observed in most of the tests, and the difference lay in the dissimilar twin formations at different loading rates. A hypothesis was developed to address the change in deformation behaviour within the subsequent loading process after a pop-in event.
In the present study, NaBi(MoO 4) 2 single crystals grown by the Czochralski method were systematically investigated through structural characterization and depth-sensing nanoindentation. X-ray diffraction confirmed phase purity and tetragonal symmetry, while Williamson–Hall analysis provided complementary insight into...

This study concerns the effect of deformation twinning on the fatigue properties of single phase Cu-8 at.% Al single crystals. The analysis was performed for two different physical states, i.e.: (i) material pre-deformed plastically to the stage just before the activation of deformation twinning, which corresponds to a...

Most ceramics suffer from brittle surface damage and cracking when small particles slide across the surface under low load. Microscratching tests are a useful technique to mimic this loading scenario while retaining the material's deformation history; however, the impact of pre-seeded dislocations, which can significan...

The deformation behavior of solders based on β-Sn is influenced by a high homologous operating temperature and microstructural heterogeneity. In this study, the deformation mechanisms of single-crystal and polycrystalline Sn were investigated using high-temperature nanoindentation combined with post-indentation microsc...
Mechanical properties of small-volume metals critically affect the reliability and performance of nano-devices. Under mechanical forces, behavior of small-volume metals differs considerably from that of their bulks, but the knowledge of how the feature size give rise to the unique characteristics is currently insuf...
