Thematic shifts and structural continuities in COIL research: a longitudinal bibliometric study (2010-2025)

Abstract

This study presents a longitudinal bibliometric analysis of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) and closely related virtual exchange scholarship from 2010 to 2025, examining the evolution of research themes, geographic distribution, and methodological approaches. Using Scopus data (n = 176 records) and co-word analysis techniques, we identify three distinct phases: foundational consolidation (2010–2017), expansion and technification (2018–2021), and institutional consolidation (2022–2025). Findings reveal steady growth in publication volume and thematic diversification, with intercultural competence remaining central while competencies such as digital literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills gain prominence. Geographic analysis shows broader participation from middle-income countries post-2020, yet leadership remains concentrated in high-income contexts. Co-word mapping suggests lexical drift rather than clear structural renewal: new terminology related to policy, equity, and assessment frameworks accretes around stable pedagogical templates, while evidence of substantially reconfigured task architectures or evaluative paradigms remains limited. The study concludes that while COIL/Virtual Exchange has achieved administrative mainstreaming and scale, its future contribution to language education and CALL depends on more explicit L2 task design, interactional evidence, feedback integration, and equitable collaboration structures.
