Abstract

Sedentary Behavior has become increasingly common due to prolonged computer use in work and educational environments. This study aims to design and implement an Internet of Things (IoT)-based Smart Desk system to monitor and mitigate prolonged sitting behavior. The system uses an ESP32 DevKit V1 microcontroller and a Load Cell pressure sensor to detect and record the user's sitting duration in real time. The collected data are processed using the Simple Moving Average (SMA) algorithm to improve the stability of sitting-duration measurements. When the accumulated sitting duration exceeds the predetermined safe threshold, the system provides progressive physical alerts through visual instructions displayed on an LCD and an interruptive buzzer alarm to encourage users to change their position and move. The system is also integrated with Node.js to store and display historical sitting-duration data through a Web Dashboard, enabling users to monitor their sitting patterns over time. The implementation demonstrates that the Smart Desk system can consistently detect prolonged static sitting and provide timely physical reminders. The integration of real-time sensing, data processing, progressive alerts, and historical monitoring provides an automated approach to mitigating Sedentary Behavior among individuals with high-intensity computer use.
