Abstract
Sodium-ion batteries are emerging as practical candidates to complement lithium-ion systems in large-scale energy storage, mainly because sodium resources are abundant, widely distributed, and relatively inexpensive. Polyanionic cathodes are especially attractive because their phosphate, pyrophosphate, fluorophosphate, and sulfate frameworks can improve structural and thermal stability. Nevertheless, their application is hindered by insufficient electronic conductivity, sluggish Na

diffusion, and moderate energy density. This review compares fluorophosphate, pyrophosphate, and sulfate cathodes, with attention to structure, sodium-storage behavior, performance, and limitations. It also discusses high-entropy regulation, mixed-polyanion design, conductive networks, nanoarchitecture engineering, and bulk-interface stabilization. Recent results show clear progress, yet synthesis control, long-term stability, electrolyte compatibility, and full-cell validation remain unresolved. Future work should link computation-guided design with scalable synthesis and cell-level optimization.
Silicon is a promising anode material for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries because of its high theoretical capacity, low operating potential, and natural abundance. However, large volume changes, poor electronic conductivity, and sluggish lithium-ion transport cause particle pulverization, unstable solid-elect...
