Abstract
As digital and AI-mediated systems increasingly capture data about learners and use it to make decisions about how their learning is supported, questions of human agency become central. Self-regulated learning (SRL) provides a multidimensional account of how learners take control of their development. Yet although foundational SRL models attended to learners’ broader life concerns, the field has progressively narrowed to task-focused regulation, and its dominant operationalisation in educational technology has narrowed further still, to behavioural proxies amenable to data-driven intervention. This paper proposes an integrative perspective that extends SRL by connecting it with two adjacent theoretical perspectives: complex systems science and Freirean critical pedagogy. The perspective foregrounds three dimensions of agency: regulation, integration, and positioning. Together they describe a learner who is not merely responsive to learning environments but capable of understanding and acting on the structural conditions shaping their experience. A cross-scale scaffold is presented: a design orientation that supports learners to move between regulation within immediate tasks, integration of patterns across their educational trajectory, and positioning in relation to the structural conditions of their learning. This perspective contributes a theoretical integration across SRL, critical pedagogy, and learning analytics that has until now remained disconnected.
Personalization without autonomy is not necessarily education. Artificial intelligence (AI) can adapt support to individual learners, yet the same system may prompt planning and reflection in one classroom while supplying answers in another. This conceptual paper addresses that divergence through the Teacher-Mediated A...

This paper explores the framework of self-regulated learning (SRL) by examining its primary psychological foundations, including social cognitive and self-efficacy theories, to emphasize that successful learning requires both the "skill" of strategy use and the "will" of internal motivation. Moving beyond traditional,...

Online and hybrid learning are now an established part of higher education, yet questions remain about what constitutes quality in these learning environments. This conceptual article argues that learner agency provides a useful lens for understanding quality in online and hybrid higher education. Learner agency is con...

It is argued that effective regulation in AI-rich environments depends not only on learners’ strategic abilities but also on their capacity to critically manage and interpret AI support, as well as the critical literacies required to engage with them.

Learner autonomy (LA), self-directed learning (SDL), and self-regulated learning (SRL) are often used interchangeably in educational research, yet they originate from different fields and are not fully interchangeable. This paper explores the similarities and differences among these constructs, highlighting their disci...

A conceptual framework that connects academic locus of control, technology use, and language learning motivation in the English as a foreign language context is proposed and argues that an internal orientation encourages the agentic behaviour through which learners seek out and continue using digital learning tools.
