Andalusian Contributions to Arabic Grammatical Thought: A Critical Analysis of Major Grammarians' Linguistic Perspectives

Abstract

This study examines the contributions of major Andalusian grammarians to the development of Arabic grammatical thought. Employing a qualitative library research design and a descriptive-analytical approach within the framework of the history of linguistic thought, the study analyzes the grammatical perspectives of Ibn Maḍāʾ al-Qurṭubī, Ibn ʿUṣfūr al-Ishbīlī, Ibn Mālik al-Jayyānī, Abū Ḥayyān al-Andalusī, and al-Shalawbinī. The findings reveal that Andalusian scholars played a significant role not only in preserving earlier grammatical traditions but also in enriching them through reform, methodological refinement, systematization of grammatical knowledge, critical evaluation of linguistic evidence, and independent interpretation. These contributions demonstrate the intellectual vitality of the Andalusian grammatical tradition and its influence on the evolution of Arabic grammar. The study concludes that Al-Andalus emerged as an important center of grammatical scholarship whose legacy continues to shape Arabic linguistic studies.
