Abstract
The rapid urbanization and population growth has led to a significant increase in the generation of solid waste in Indian cities, posing serious environmental and public health challenges. Nashik City, which is one of the fast growing urban centres in Maharashtra, faces many challenges in the effective management of municipal solid waste. The present paper deals with the existing solid waste management system in Nashik City with special reference to waste generation, collection, transportation, segregation, processing and disposal practices. It highlights key issues such as inadequate source segregation, improper disposal methods, limited public awareness, insufficient infrastructure and increasing pressure on landfill sites. The study is based on secondary data collected from government reports, publications of Nashik Municipal Corporation, research articles and other relevant sources. The findings suggest that the municipal authorities have launched a number of waste management initiatives but are still struggling to implement them effectively and to involve the public. Increased waste segregation at source, recycling and composting, the use of modern waste processing technologies and increased community awareness can improve solid waste management. The study finds that the need of the proper planning, better infrastructure, public participation and strict implementation of waste management policies to address the increasing waste management problems in Nashik City and build a cleaner and healthier urban environment.
