Abstract

This study assessed the challenges facing rural farm enterprises in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria, with the objective of examining the major constraints affecting their operations, productivity and sustainability. The study covered all eleven council wards in Apa Local Government Area and focused on rural farmers and operators of farm-related enterprises. A qualitative research design was adopted, while purposive sampling was used to select two respondents from each ward, giving a total of 22 respondents. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and were analysed thematically with the aid of NVivo software. The findings showed that rural farm enterprises faced four major groups of challenges. First, limited access to finance and the high cost of fertiliser, seeds, agrochemicals and animal feed reduced farmers’ ability to expand production. Secondly, poor roads, inadequate storage facilities, high transport costs and weak market access reduced the income gained from farm produce. Furthermore, labour shortages, limited mechanisation and irregular extension services affected timely farm operations and access to improved farming knowledge. In addition, changing weather conditions, pests, diseases, insecurity and limited government support increased the vulnerability of farm enterprises. The study concluded that these challenges were closely connected and jointly weakened rural farm performance. It therefore recommended improved access to affordable credit and subsidised inputs, better farm-to-market roads and storage facilities, increased mechanisation and extension services, stronger veterinary and crop protection support, and improved security and coordination among relevant agricultural agencies.
