Abstract

This study investigates the variability, long-term trends, and potential drivers of surface wind speed in Northeast China during winter and spring over the past four decades, utilizing daily average surface wind observations and reanalysis data. A piecewise linear regression analysis identified 2013 as a critical inflection point, marking a transition from declining to increasing wind speeds. Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis revealed two dominant modes: a sustained decline driven by global warming (EOF1) and a decadal shift associated with North Atlantic sea surface temperature cooling (EOF2). The first mode exhibited a pronounced decline, particularly in spring, linked to weakened westerly winds and reduced temperature gradients due to global warming. The second mode displayed a decrease followed by an increase, with winter wind speeds showing a stronger recovery, attributed to Rossby wave trains triggered by North Atlantic SST cooling. These findings provide critical insights for wind energy planning and underscore the contrasting roles of global and regional climate drivers in modulating wind speed trends.

When the Mountains Stop Warming the Plains: Anomalous Winter and Spring Cooling in Southeastern Alberta Linked to Reduced Chinook Activity

ABSTRACT Winter and spring surface air temperatures across North America show near-ubiquitous warming over the past 75+  years in both station observations and reanalysis datasets. Embedded within this broad pattern, however, is a region of ∼220,000 km² in southeastern Alberta that exhibits persistent spring and, to a...

The Influence of Atmospheric River Seasonality and Orientation on Pacific Northwest Surface Temperatures

Atmospheric rivers (ARs) influence weather and climate along the North American west coast, yet their effects on Pacific Northwest (PNW) surface temperatures remain unclear across seasons and synoptic configurations. Motivated by the 2021 PNW heatwave—which was preceded by a poleward‐tracking AR—we analyze how ARs modu...

Rapid Surface Intensification of the Gulf Stream Since 2014

The warm, swift Gulf Stream (GS) plays a key role in shaping weather and climate patterns across the North Atlantic. Using 31‐year (1993–2023) of continuous satellite altimeter observations, we identify a pronounced intensification of the free‐flowing GS after its separation from the coast beginning around 2014 and per...

Seasonal Variability, Long-Term Trends, and Extreme-Value Statistics of ERA5 Wave Climate Along the West African Coast, 1940–2024

West African coastal zones are increasingly exposed to climatic and anthropogenic pressures that may enhance erosion, marine flooding, and changes in offshore wave conditions. This study investigates the spatial variability, seasonality, long-term trends, and extreme statistics of wave climate along the West African co...

Seasonal to Multi‐Year Variability of Upwelling Along Southwest Greenland and the Role of Atmospheric Circulation

Upwelling along southwest Greenland plays an important role in modulating shelf‐basin exchange and influencing deep convection in the Labrador Sea. Here we investigate its seasonal and interannual variability using the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program West Greenland mooring observations and atmosphe...

The role of global warming trend and tropical interannual variability as drivers of South America’s 2022–2024 climate extremes

From 2022 to 2024, South America experienced unprecedented regional climate extremes with severe socioeconomic impacts. These included extreme anomalies in temperature and precipitation, causing extreme drought conditions in southeastern South America and the Altiplano during spring 2022; extreme fire weather in centra...
