Urban transport infrastructure shapes accessibility and the spatial organization of economic activity, yet its relationship with city-level industrial transformation remains insufficiently understood. This study examines the association between urban road infrastructure provision and industrial upgrading using 2446 city-year observations for 253 Chinese cities from 2011 to 2024. Road provision is measured by the natural logarithm of per capita urban road area reported by the China Stock Market & Accounting Research (CSMAR) Database, while industrial upgrading is measured by the ratio of tertiary- to secondary-industry value added. Two-way fixed-effects estimates indicate a positive but economically modest association (β = 0.1345, p = 0.034). However, the coefficient becomes statistically insignificant with province-by-year fixed effects, and the positive estimate for non-shrinking city-years is imprecise, so population shrinkage cannot be ruled out as contributing to the baseline association. Alternative measures of absolute road scale and network density are not statistically significant. The findings therefore apply most directly to road provision relative to population and do not establish a causal effect or empirically verified mechanism. They support more targeted assessments of how urban road provision aligns with structural transition and provide a basis for future research using direct measures of network performance, congestion, and accessibility.
The spatial allocation of urban road infrastructure directly affects urban operational efficiency, social equity, and ecological environmental quality. Taking 36 major Chinese cities as the research subjects and drawing on data from municipal statistical yearbooks, this study employs a composite index method, Theil ind...

Land transport infrastructure (LTI) is a core component of sustainable transport systems, shaping mobility, efficiency, and the spatial distribution of development gains. Existing studies of urban–rural income inequality mainly focus on individual transport modes or aggregate infrastructure scale, with limited attentio...

Road transport facilities stimulate regional development by influencing land-use change, accessibility, and socio-economic transformations. However, the extent to which road hierarchy alone drives regional transformation remains unclear, particularly in resource-dependent regions. The study examines the association bet...

Based on open data from Rosstat for 2024–2025, a multidimensional clustering of Russian regions (excluding federal cities) was carried out. Five indicators were included in the analysis: density of paved roads, share of paved roads, share of roads with improved pavement, road provision per population, and per capita gr...

High-speed railway (HSR) has emerged as a transformative force in China, markedly reshaping urban development and spatial structures. Here, we examine the indirect mechanisms through which enhanced HSR connectivity influences urban land expansion. We construct national HSR networks for 2011, 2014, and 2017, and assess...
