Abstract
The study investigates how genetic enhancement, referred to as “lifting”, functions as a mechanism of posthuman stratification rather than human improvement in Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun (2021), by integrating posthumanist theory and critical disability studies frameworks. The theoretical framework combines Rosi Braidotti’s and N. Katherine Hayles’ seminal works from posthuman literary criticism, and Tobin Siebers’, Rosemarie Garland-Thomson’, and Lennard Davis’ critical works from critical disability studies’ perspectives. The study employs qualitative descriptive approach, combining close textual analysis with theoretical interpretation, to explore how “lifting” as a genetic enhancement creates a new form of rigid social hierarchy between “lifted” and “unlifted” children. The study reveals that “lifting” functions as an instrument of stratification into which inequality is biologized and normalized. It hides serious possible risks and transforms parental love into cooperation with biotechnological capitalism. Furthermore, by competitive logic, pushes parents to put their kids to risky interventions, making enhancement a necessity rather than personal choice.
The field of genetic engineering has witnessed a tremendous growth in the contemporary era in which genetic modifications have yielded desired outcomes. Particularly, genetic determinism has played a vital role in comprehending the present-day evolving identities that are formed, contested and altered in this technolog...

Whether the biological and moral constitution of humans possesses a fixed essence or exhibits a dynamic nature shaped by environmental factors remains a central question. It is a focal point of modern science—particularly epigenetics—and a fundamental issue in theology, bearing on fiṭrah (innate human disposition) and...

This article explores the notion of “born-again” (palingenesis) in relation to “Christian fascism” found in far-right Christian movements. This research is urgent given the rising polarization between Christians' political left and right, which is drifting away from the ecumenical unity envisioned by Our Lord Jesus Chr...

Gerard Johnstone’s M3GAN (2022) presents artificial intelligence not merely as a technological threat but as a challenge to the conceptual boundaries through which humanity defines itself. The film centres on M3GAN, an artificially intelligent humanoid doll created to become a child’s companion and protector, but her i...

The public Christian theologian needs to assess the threats and promises of technosapienism in light of God’s promises that through sanctification the authors can become Christlike, living the holy life on Earth as well as in the future resurrection.
ABSTRACT Scientific research is a political enterprise, and is therefore susceptible to cultural biases. With its central role in understanding humans as a species, primatology is particularly vulnerable to this dynamic, requiring researchers to carefully assess both the influences shaping their work and the implicatio...
