The transition toward electric mobility has emerged as a key strategy for reducing transport-sector emissions and promoting sustainable development. Despite the rapid growth of electric vehicle (EV) registrations in India, the pace of adoption remains uneven across states and union territories. This study examines the macro-level determinants associated with regional disparities in EV adoption across 29 Indian states and union territories during FY2024–2025. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression with heteroskedasticity-robust standard errors is used to estimate the empirical model, while an extended specification incorporating urbanization is estimated to assess the robustness of the baseline findings. The results indicate that public charging infrastructure and population density are positively associated with EV adoption, with population density emerging as the strongest determinant among the variables examined. In contrast, per capita power availability does not exhibit a statistically significant association with EV adoption. Although per capita NSDP shows a negative and marginally significant association in the baseline model, this relationship is not robust across alternative model specifications. The robustness analysis further reveals that urbanization is not significantly associated with EV adoption, while the principal findings regarding charging infrastructure and population density remain unchanged. The findings highlight the importance of strengthening charging infrastructure and considering regional demographic characteristics while formulating state-specific EV promotion strategies.

India's electric vehicle market has grown rapidly, with EVs accounting for approximately 8 percent of new vehicle registrations in 2025 and total sales crossing 2.55 million units in FY2025-26. This paper examines EV adoption trends across vehicle segments, identifies the principal barriers constraining adoption, and a...

The global transition to electric mobility has accelerated considerably, yet countries continue to exhibit substantial differences in the pace, scale, and structural configuration of electrification. While prior research has largely focused on the determinants of electric vehicle (EV) adoption, comparatively limited at...

South Asia is rapidly motorizing, facing acute crises in urban air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, and petroleum import dependence. Electric vehicles (EVs) offer a promising transition, yet the regional evidence base remains fragmented. This scoping review, guided by the PRISMA-ScR framework, systematically maps the...

Rapid electric vehicle (EV) adoption is central to decarbonizing road transport, but national averages obscure substantial city-level differences, limiting understanding of the local conditions that shape market diffusion and its carbon implications. We assembled a city-year dataset covering 296 Chinese cities from 201...

This study examines whether electric-vehicle (EV) adoption is associated with lower transport-sector carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions using a balanced panel of 31 countries observed annually from 2010 to 2022. Because EV adoption most directly affects road transport rather than economy-wide emissions, transport-sector CO...
