The Impact Mechanism of the Agricultural Input Price Index on Water Quality at River Monitoring Sections: Evidence from Provincial Panel Data

Abstract

This study examines the impact of agricultural input prices on river water quality in China, using provincial panel data and high-frequency monitoring records for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH₃-N). In our own research, we have collected data from 30 provinces from 2010 to 2020.Employing a two-way fixed effects model, we find significant heterogeneity across input types. Rising fertilizer prices reduce pollution through cost constraints and input substitution, supporting a price-induced reduction effect. Pesticide prices show no statistically significant effect, reflecting their inelastic demand as essential crop protection inputs. In contrast, higher mechanization costs are associated with increased pollution, as they discourage the use of efficient machinery and prompt a return to less precise traditional practices, thereby exacerbating nutrient runoff. These results suggest that price-based policies are not uniformly effective. We therefore propose a three-pronged strategy: reforming fertilizer pricing to curb overuse, providing targeted subsidies for green mechanization to lower adoption barriers, and establishing cross-regional governance frameworks to address spatial spillovers in water quality management.

Agricultural machinery capacity and input intensities in China: evidence across fertilizer categories, diesel, pesticide, and plastic film

Total agricultural machinery power records installed capacity rather than utilization or engineering efficiency. We examine its association with eight input intensities across 31 provincial-level regions in mainland China. The source panel spans 2000–2024, while the cross-input benchmark uses an exact common sample o...

Green finance and joint urban performance in pollution control and carbon mitigation: evidence from the Yangtze River Economic Belt, China

Pollution control and carbon mitigation often involve the same energy inputs and production processes, yet the role of finance in shaping their combined urban outcomes remains insufficiently understood. Using panel data for 110 Chinese cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) from 2010 to 2023, this study exami...

A Study on the Carbon Emission Reduction Effects and Spatial Heterogeneity of Livestock Manure Fertilizer Substitution Driven by the Rural Revitalization Strategy in China

Promoting manure-based fertilizer substitution is important for nutrient recycling and agricultural carbon mitigation under China’s Rural Revitalization Strategy and dual-carbon agenda. Using provincial panel data for 31 provinces in mainland China from 2017 to 2024, this study develops an integrated framework to estim...

Carbon trading and agricultural green total factor productivity: evidence from China’s pilot carbon market and the mediating role of mechanization

Agriculture is both a major source of greenhouse gas emissions and highly vulnerable to climate-related risks, yet the implications of carbon pricing for agricultural sustainability remain insufficiently understood. This study examines the effect of China’s carbon trading pilot policy (CTPP) on agricultural green total...

Can legalization of farmland property rights increase grain yield and reduce fertilizer-related non-point source pollution? Evidence from the Reform of Separation of Three Land Rights

Securing food supplies while raising farm incomes and reducing fertilizer-related pollution is a central challenge for China’s transition toward greener agricultural production. The Reform of Separation of Three Land Rights changed how farmland rights are defined and exercised, with potential consequences for the o...

Fertilizer Intensity, Agricultural Productivity, and Agricultural Emissions: Ratio Decomposition in a 24-Country Panel

Fertilizer use can raise agricultural output while increasing emissions, making ratio-based environmental indicators potentially misleading. This study evaluates these relationships in a panel of 24 countries from five regions and advances sustainability assessment by distinguishing relative emissions efficiency from a...
