Constant Modulus Waveform Design for Slow-Time Ambiguity Function

Abstract

This work addresses the synthesis of constant-modulus (CM) radar waveforms whose range-Doppler behavior approximates a prescribed profile in the presence of multiple interference sources. Since the interference power at the matched-filter output amounts to an average of the slow-time ambiguity function (STAF) of the transmitted code evaluated at the interference range-Doppler bins, the design task is essentially one of shaping the STAF. The resulting formulation is high-dimensional and non-convex because of the CM requirement, which hampers conventional optimization tools in Euclidean space. To circumvent this difficulty, we recast the design as an unconstrained problem on a Riemannian manifold and tackle it directly with a trust-region scheme defined on that manifold. The Riemannian gradient and Hessian of the quartic cost are derived in closed form, the trust-region subproblem is solved by a truncated conjugate gradient procedure, and the computational complexity of each iteration is analyzed. Then an enhanced solver called Adaptive regularization with cubics (ARC) is developed, improving the performance based on the step-acceptance mechanism. Numerical results under two interference scenarios show that, compared with the existing method, the proposed approach produces deeper nulls at the interference locations while requiring less computation time.

Complementary Waveform Coordination for Doppler-Resilient MIMO Radar

Complementary waveform libraries yield impulse-like aggregate delay responses at zero Doppler, but pulse-dependent Doppler phases degrade their sidelobe cancellation. This paper develops a linear-algebraic formulation for coordinating a (D)-ary transmission schedule and slow-time receive weights for paraunitary MIMO wa...

MIMO Radar Waveform Design for Transmit Beampattern and Correlation Tradeoff via Manifold-Projection Iteration

The broad transmit beampattern of orthogonal multiple-input multiple-output radar makes it vulnerable to spatial interference. To address this issue while preserving the advantages of orthogonality, this article investigates the tradeoff between the transmit beampattern and waveform correlation. A biobjective optimizat...

Nonlinear Waveform Design for Dual-Mode Radar Using Controlled Loss of Structure

Modern radar requires waveforms that are analytically tractable for coherent processing yet irregular enough to deny exploitation by intercept receivers. This article addresses both requirements with a single nonlinear oscillator. A conservative double-well cubic–quintic oscillator is studied in a degenerate parameter...

Shaping Delay-Doppler Ambiguity in Practical OFDM-ISAC

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is a key waveform for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). Existing OFDM ambiguity analyses, however, typically assume fully occupied data-only waveforms, whereas practical frames contain direct-current and edge-guard nulls, fixed pilots, and random payload symb...

Fluid Antenna Channel Reconstruction with Non-Negative Least Square Detector

Reconstructing the full-aperture channel of a fluid antenna system (FAS) from a few activated ports requires inferring unobserved responses from limited spatial samples. This paper proposes a covariance-domain FAS channel-reconstruction method based on nonnegative least squares (NNLS). A nonuniform port arrangement con...

A Mathematical Theory of Near-Field Super-Resolution

Finite-aperture near-field sensing leads to a super-resolution geometry fundamentally different from the translation-invariant Fourier setting. In the Fresnel regime, wavefront curvature introduces a range-dependent quadratic aperture phase, so distinguishability is governed by incomplete quadratic exponential sums of...
