Abstract

Academic supervision is widely regarded as a central mechanism through which school principals strengthen teacher professionalism, yet how this process unfolds within a single school remains underexamined. This study explored the implementation of academic supervision at SD Negeri 1 Tegowanu Kulon, Grobogan Regency, Indonesia, aiming to describe its planning, implementation, evaluation, and follow-up stages, identify accompanying challenges, and examine its contribution to teacher professionalism. A qualitative case study design was employed, involving one school principal and six classroom teachers as primary participants, with senior teachers and the vice principal for curriculum affairs as additional informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentary analysis, then analyzed using an interactive model of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with credibility established through source and method triangulation and member checking. Findings showed that supervision was enacted as a collaborative, differentiated cycle comprising systematic planning, reflective observation, constructive feedback, and sustained coaching through evaluation and follow-up. This cycle was associated with improvements in teachers' lesson planning, classroom practice, assessment competence, and professional commitment, although limited principal time and uneven teacher readiness continued to constrain more complete instructional improvement. The study concludes that academic supervision functions most effectively as an integrated developmental process rather than discrete administrative tasks, offering a process-based framework for designing more coherent, teacher-responsive supervision programs in primary schools.
