A Study on Effectiveness of Performance Appraisal System
Abstract
Abstract Performance appraisal is an important human resource practice because it connects an employee’s day-to-day contribution with organizational expectations, development, recognition and career growth. This article presents a concise, humanized version of the study conducted at Chamfer Alkalis Limited to understand how employees perceive the effectiveness of the organization’s performance appraisal system. The study used a descriptive research design and simple random sampling. A sample of 100 employees was selected from a population of 250 employees. Primary information was collected through a structured questionnaire, supported by interviews and observation, while secondary information was obtained from journals, the company profile, company manuals and internet-based material. Percentage analysis, an independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to examine the responses. The results show generally positive employee perceptions. For example, 60% of respondents either agreed or strongly agreed that the appraisal system is fair and unbiased, while 68% reported agreement or strong agreement that the appraisal process is conducted regularly. The findings also indicate that employees see the appraisal system as useful for identifying strengths, training needs, career development, communication and productivity. At the same time, areas such as recognition and rewards, consistency across departments, timely feedback and employee participation require continued attention. The statistical analysis reported no significant difference in overall appraisal satisfaction by gender, while a significant difference was found among age groups. Overall, the study concludes that the appraisal system is effective, but its value can be strengthened through greater transparency, regular feedback, objective standards, employee discussion and stronger links between appraisal outcomes and development.
