Machine Learning in E-Commerce: Trends, Applications, and Future Challenges
Abstract
E-commerce platforms continuously generate large amounts of data from customer searches, browsing activities, purchases, reviews, and delivery operations. Machine learning (ML) turns this data into useful predictions and decisions that improve product recommendations, pricing, fraud detection, inventory management, and customer engagement. This paper presents a structured review of ML in e-commerce, focusing on how different learning techniques can support practical business activities. It discusses supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement, hybrid, and adaptive learning approaches and examines their applications in recommendation systems, fraud detection, dynamic pricing, demand forecasting, customer segmentation, search, and logistics. The paper also highlights challenges such as data privacy, bias, lack of explainability, processing speed, scalability, poor data quality, and changes in data patterns over time. “To address these concerns, a synthesised architecture is proposed that connects data collection, data preparation, model selection, business applications, and continuous monitoring.” The review suggests that the future of intelligent e-commerce will require more than high prediction accuracy. Privacy-preserving techniques, continuous model adaptation, multimodal interaction, and trustworthy AI will play an important role in developing reliable and responsible e-commerce systems. Based on these findings, the paper identifies practical areas for future research toward scalable and responsible ML-based e-commerce solutions.
