Abstract

INTRODUCTION Molecular biology investigates processes that occur at microscopic scales and are not directly observable, which often makes them difficult to communicate to non-specialist audiences. At the same time, advances such as gene editing, sequencing technologies, and molecular diagnostics are increasingly present in public discourse. These developments reinforce the importance of effective science communication strategies capable of translating complex molecular concepts into accessible narratives.

Objectives

This study aims to develop visual and narrative strategies for communicating key concepts in molecular biology to broad audiences, promoting scientific literacy through accessible representations of contemporary research.

Methods

STRATEGY A science communication platform was developed, consisting of a dedicated website and materials designed for dissemination through social media and science journalism channels. The content is based on peer-reviewed research articles published by laboratories from the Department of Biochemistry at IQ-USP. These studies are communicated through texts, images, and illustrated infographics explaining research questions, experimental approaches, and scientific relevance. The articles also serve as a starting point for educational materials explaining molecular biology techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR, Western blotting and immunofluorescence, some accompanied by animated infographics. Additional materials include explanations of fundamental concepts in molecular biology and narratives about historical experiments that shaped the field.

Results

Preliminary qualitative observations suggest that combining visual representations, explanations of laboratory methods, and historical perspectives may help make molecular biology concepts more accessible to non-specialist audiences. However, the project is still in progress, and further data will be collected to support a more detailed analysis of the effectiveness of these communication strategies. Planned assessments include audience questionnaires aimed at evaluating learning outcomes, as well as metrics related to the dissemination and engagement of the published materials across the project website and social media platforms.

Conclusion

These approaches may contribute to improving the public understanding of molecular biology and strengthening scientific literacy.
