Optimizing Drone-Based Long-Distance Delivery with a Wireless Charging Station Network on Public and Private Infrastructure

· IISE Annual Conference & Expo 2025 · 0 citations

Abstract

This study addresses the challenges of long-distance delivery using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by proposing a comprehensive network of wireless charging stations strategically located on both public and private buildings. Public infrastructures, such as police stations and fire departments, serve as primary charging hubs, while private buildings offer additional stations through a higher-cost rental model. Recognizing the trade-off between battery capacity and drone payload—where larger batteries increase weight and size—we optimize the balance between battery size and weight to enhance drone efficiency. The research involves determining the optimal locations for these charging stations to maximize coverage and minimize downtime. Building on this foundation, we develop a robust algorithm for routing and charging drones, ensuring timely deliveries and enabling drones to return to their depot with sufficient charge. This integrated approach aims to improve the scalability and reliability of UAV-based delivery systems, offering a viable solution for sustainable long-distance logistics.
