The Role of Ambidexterity and Resilience Synergy in Driving MSME Performance in North Sumatra, Indonesia
Abstract
This study examines the synergistic influence of organizational ambidexterity and business resilience on the performance of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in North Sumatra, Indonesia. While prior research has often investigated these constructs independently, this paper introduces a novel integrated framework that captures their combined effect in a unique regional context characterized by traditional market competition and low technological adoption. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 110 MSMEs across multiple sectors and analyzed via SEM-PLS. The findings reveal that both ambidexterity and resilience significantly enhance MSME performance, with resilience exhibiting a stronger impact. Notably, the integrated model explains 75.1% of the variance in performance, underscoring the potent synergy between innovation-driven exploration and crisis-responsive adaptability. This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating how the confluence of ambidexterity and resilience forms a critical strategic foundation for sustainable MSME growth, particularly in post-pandemic and developing-economy settings. The results offer valuable insights for policymakers and MSME support institutions aiming to foster dynamic capabilities in increasingly volatile environments.
