Abstract
An embodied agent must prioritise among competing bodily needs. In active inference, it can respond to an urgent need by increasing the precision of information about that need or by increasing its preference for outcomes that relieve it. We compare these two interventions, separately and together, in a foraging gridworld with three lethal needs, and ask how each changes survival, perception and the body model the agent learns. Precision sharpens interoceptive posteriors and improves survival. Preference reweighting keeps bodily states further from their lethal boundaries and changes the states from which the agent learns, so its learned model covers fewer need levels, with lower quality across all levels but slightly higher quality on the levels it visits. An experiment on 72 further layouts does not establish the predicted preference benefit on difficult layouts, but both interventions improve average survival there and their interaction is positive. Survival alone therefore gives an incomplete account of how a model prioritises needs and learns about its body.
This paper investigates developing real-world perception for active agents, proposes Gibson Environment for this purpose, and showcases a set of perceptual tasks learned therein.

This work proposes a HALO that directly maximizes the utility of generations instead of maximizing the log-likelihood of preferences, and suggests that the best loss depends on the inductive biases most appropriate for a given setting, an oft-overlooked consideration.
This work investigates the possibilities of using LLMs in a resume screening setting via a document retrieval framework that simulates job candidate selection and finds that the MTEs are biased, significantly favoring White-associated names in 85% of cases and female-associated names in only 11.1% of cases.
This work shows that orders of magnitude enhancement in performance could be obtained by a combination of hardware improvements and tight quantum-HPC integration and introduces high-performance architectures for quantum-probabilistic computing with custom-designed accelerators to tackle today's industry-scale classical...
