A Comprehensive Review on Vateria indica.
Abstract
Vateria indica Linn., belonging to the family Dipterocarpaceae, is a large tropical evergreen tree indigenous to the Western Ghats of India¹². It is widely recognized for its medicinal, ecological, and commercial significance. The plant produces a valuable oleoresin known as white dammar, which has been extensively used in traditional medicine and industrial applications³. Phytochemical investigations have revealed the presence of flavonoids, triterpenoids, phenolic compounds, steroids, and resin acids that contribute to its biological activities¹⁰. Pharmacological studies have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, wound-healing, and anticancer properties⁹¹⁰. The species also plays a crucial ecological role in maintaining biodiversity and forest stability¹⁸. However, due to overexploitation, deforestation, and habitat fragmentation, its population is declining, making conservation strategies essential¹⁸. This review provides a comprehensive overview of its taxonomy, botanical features, phytochemistry, traditional uses, pharmacological activities
