AI Code Synthesis, Autonomous Debugging, and the Evolution of the Software Engineering Lifecycle: Repository Graph Reasoning, SWE-bench Benchmarks, and Security Bounds

Abstract

Abstract—The software engineering (SWE) lifecycle has transitioned from human-centric manual programming toward autonomous AI code synthesis and closed-loop program repair. Foundation models pre-trained on billions of source code tokens—including modern frontier models and specialized coding LLMs—have evolved beyond isolated function autocompletion toward whole-repository fault localization, cross-file patch synthesis, and dynamic regression test generation. However, deploying autonomous agentic coding frameworks in enterprise software development environments exposes acute structural vulnerabilities: contextual fragmentation across massive Abstract Syntax Trees (ASTs), patch-induced semantic regressions, dependency hallucination attacks (e.g., package typosquatting), and severe computational token overhead during multi-step debugging loops. This paper presents an exhaustive, mathematically formal technical investigation and empirical benchmark of autonomous AI code synthesis. We formalize program synthesis as directed exploration over Program Dependency Graphs (PDGs), establish the mathematical mechanics of execution-guided test-time search with verbal reinforcement feedback (Reflexion), and model repository-scale retrieval using tree-sitter AST parsing. Furthermore, we construct an empirical benchmarking testbed evaluating state-of-the-art coding architectures across 500 real-world open-source software engineering issues from SWE-bench Lite and SWE-bench Verified. Our findings demonstrate that while single-turn code generation models achieve only a 14.8% resolve rate, agentic tree-search architectures coupled with AST-guided repository graphs achieve a 46.2% issue resolution rate. Concurrently, execution-guided sandbox feedback reduces semantic patch regression by 64.8%, though AI-generated code introduces a 19.4% prevalence of unverified dependency inclusions. Finally, we formulate open research directions in neuro-symbolic program verification, verified formal specification synthesis, and automated zero-shot licensing provenance. Index Terms—AI Code Synthesis, Automated Program Repair (APR), SWE-bench, Program Dependency Graphs (PDG), Abstract Syntax Tree (AST), Repository-Level Reasoning, Software Security, Agentic Coding.

The impact of agile practices on communication in software development

The study shows that agile practices improve both informal and formal communication, but indicates that, in larger development situations involving multiple external stakeholders, a mismatch of adequate communication mechanisms can sometimes even hinder the communication.
