Abstract

We present a real-time trackless method to monitor the centre of the LHCb luminous region and the relative alignment of the two halves of the LHCb Vertex Locator, using cluster counts accumulated in selected regions of the detector and processed in firmware. A Principal Component Analysis performed on simulated data yields a set of weight vectors that reduce the position estimators to scalar products of the counter rates, executable with negligible computational overhead. With pp collision data from 2024, the transverse position of the luminous region is reconstructed with a statistical precision of approximately 4 micrometre per coordinate in a 90 millisecond accumulation window. A measurement of the longitudinal centre is demonstrated with a statistical precision of a few millimetres in simulated studies. The introduction of run-time configurable firmware counters has been studied in simulation to improve the transverse and longitudinal resolutions by a factor of three with respect to the fixed-geometry baseline.

Real-time Track Reconstruction with FPGAs: an example from MUonE

The feasibility of real-time track fitting of straight tracks for online event selection is shown in the context of the MUonE experiment. In order to reach the high throughput and low latency required for real-time track fitting, the tracking algorithm is implemented using High-Level Synthesis for an FPGA, which provid...

Commissioning and Performance of the Time-of-Flight Detector for the T2K Neutrino Oscillation Experiment

The T2K ND280 Upgrade aims to reduce systematic uncertainties in measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters and improve sensitivity to the charge-parity (CP)-violating phase, $\delta_{\mathrm{CP}}$. A key component is the Time-of-Flight (ToF) detector, comprising six panels with 118 EJ-200 plastic-scintillator bar...

Fast Timing at Colliders: From Scintillator Hodoscopes to MicroPattern Arrays

We give a select overview of charged particle timing at colliders. Roughly speaking, three eras capture the evolution of timing arrays. While luminosity and multiplicity dictate the detector technologies, there is also a need to review the various approaches to signal capture and processing, and their role in changing...

Beam Spill Structure Measurements at CEE Using the T0 Detector

The Cooling Storage Ring External-target Experiment (CEE) at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou uses a slow-extracted heavy-ion beam whose temporal profile directly affects detector occupancy. The existing CEE T0 detector, originally designed to provide the event start time, is extended in this work to measure...

Functional characterization of modules for the Silicon Tracking System of the CBM experiment

The CBM experiment is a fixed-target heavy-ion physics experiment at the future FAIR facility, designed to explore the QCD phase diagram at high baryon-net densities and moderate temperatures. To address its complex physics program, the experiment is conceived to operate at beam–target interaction rates up to 10 MHz wi...

Surface Commissioning and Performance of the sMDT Muon Chambers for the ATLAS HL-LHC Upgrade

To improve the first-level muon trigger efficiency at the HL-LHC, the Monitored Drift Tube (MDT) chambers in the inner small sectors of the ATLAS Barrel Muon Spectrometer will be replaced with integrated modules of small-Diameter Muon Drift Tube (sMDT) and Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs). This paper reports on the surf...
