Abstract

The feasibility of real-time track fitting of straight tracks for online event selection is shown in the context of the MUonE experiment. In order to reach the high throughput and low latency required for real-time track fitting, the tracking algorithm is implemented using High-Level Synthesis for an FPGA, which provides provides a balance between flexibility and performance. Hardware tracking results from a test with high-rate muons at the CERN M2 beam are presented. This test, a joint effort by the MUonE and Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiments, operated with Two-Strip (2S) modules provided by the CMS tracker group. The prototype version of the fitter used in this test achieves 3.75 $\mu$s latency and 7.75 % resource use. A comparison of the results with those obtained from a pure software implementation shows agreement well below relevant uncertainty scales. Developments since the test are also presented, with the hardware algorithm now reaching 1.35 $\mu$s latency and producing pipelined fitting results above 50 MHz while requiring less resources than the initial version. Doing so required including certain assumptions in the algorithm, but these assumptions hold for linear track fitting in general and algorithm remains useful in contexts other than MUonE.

FPGA-based muon shower identification and graph neural network tracking algorithms for HL-LHC triggers

This work presents two hardware-accelerated strategies for the upgrade of the CMS Level-1 Trigger (L1T) to target efficiency losses due to highly energetic radiating muons and unconventional physics signatures, such as Long-Lived Particles (LLPs). Operating directly on low-level detector hits, the first strategy implem...

mkFit for track fitting with the CMS Phase-2 detector

The mkFit algorithm provides an implementation of the Kalman filter-based track reconstruction algorithm that exploits both thread- and data-level parallelism. It has been adopted by the CMS Collaboration as the primary track building algorithm during the Run 3 of the LHC for both the online and offline track reconstru...

Offline vs Real-Time Validation and Performance Assessment of Heimdall Detection Pipeline for Fast Radio Bursts

Data rates from current radio telescopes are of $\sim$O(10)PB/y and we expect a growth of an order of magnitude for future radio telescopes, e.g. SKA. Coping with these data flows requires a paradigm change in data management: building pipelines with intense I/O between their modules (offline mode) is becoming unsustai...
