Abstract

Thermoelectric materials must have a balance of high electronic conductivity and low thermal conductivity. Doping is one approach to achieve this goal, both to enhance electronic conductivity and suppress thermal transport. Because it has these multiple effects, however, it can both increase or reduce thermoelectric efficiency. We use stroboSCAT spatiotemporal microscopy to investigate doping in thermoelectrics, providing direct access to electronic and thermal diffusivities inaccessible to bulk methods. With measurements spanning a large fs-μs dynamic range, we observe that heat transport is strongly influenced by material morphology. While long-time thermal diffusivity measured by stroboSCAT agrees with bulk measurements, in the first 100ps heat diffuses within crystalline domains with three orders of magnitude greater diffusivity. The transition to bulk-like diffusion occurs when heat encounters grain boundaries. Intercrystalline diffusion is strongly modulated by doping, while intracrystalline diffusion is unaffected. Our work offers microscopic mechanistic insights into how doping affects thermoelectricity.

Rational Design of ZnO-Based Thermoelectrics through Multiscale Electron and Phonon Engineering

ZnO is an attractive n-type oxide thermoelectric material for high-temperature energy harvesting because of its elemental abundance, environmental compatibility, chemical robustness, and thermal stability under oxidizing conditions. Its thermoelectric performance, however, remains constrained by intrinsically high la...

Scaling Diradicaloid Thermoelectricity

The identification of molecular materials with high thermoelectric performance has attracted considerable attention due to their unique quantum properties, elemental abundance, and environmental friendliness. Achieving this requires overcoming the conventional tradeoff between the Seebeck coefficient (S) and electrical...

Origins of Pressure-Enhanced Thermal Transport in Organic Semiconductors

While pressure is known to dramatically alter the electronic properties of organic semiconductors, its impact on their thermal conductivity remains poorly understood. We combine machine learned potentials with the Wigner transport equation to compute the pressure-dependent thermal conductivity of crystalline naphthalen...

Native Defects-Induced Fermi-Level Pinning and Diffuson-Mediated Thermal Transport in BiSbSe3 Thermoelectrics.

Ultralow thermal conductivity is widely recognized as a core characteristic of promising thermoelectrics, yet many such materials still fail to realize high thermoelectric performance. Te-free BiSbSe3 embodies this contradiction: its intrinsically ultralow thermal conductivity makes it promising for medium-temperature...

Effects of Fabrication Processes and Temperature on Exciton Diffusion in Non-Fullerene Acceptors

Exciton diffusion to donor–acceptor interfaces plays a critical role in charge generation in organic solar cells, yet its dependence on film fabrication and operating temperature remains poorly understood for high-performance nonfullerene acceptors. Here, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and exciton–exci...

Coexistence of Large Nernst Effect and Axis‐Dependent Conduction Polarity in Semimetal MoSi 2

Transverse thermoelectric phenomena are often considered as an alternative strategy for improving thermoelectric performance beyond standard longitudinal Seebeck response. Here, we show that the semimetallic compound is a rare example of a material in which transverse thermopower arises from two different mechanisms....
