ENHANCING OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY AND SUPPLY CHAIN RESILIENCE IN THE FISH PROCESSING INDUSTRY: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO NYANZA PERCH LTD, UGANDA

Abstract

The fish processing industry represents a critical component of global food systems and export-oriented economic development, particularly in emerging economies. However, operational inefficiencies and supply chain disruptions continue to challenge organizational sustainability due to the perishable nature of fish products, logistics constraints, and inadequate cold chain infrastructure. This study investigates operational efficiency and supply chain challenges in the fish processing industry with special reference to Nyanza Perch Ltd, Uganda. The study aims to evaluate operational practices, identify major supply chain bottlenecks, and propose strategic measures for improving organizational performance and resilience. A descriptive and analytical research design was adopted. Primary data were collected from 120 employees using a structured questionnaire based on a five-point Likert scale. Secondary data were obtained from journals, industry reports, and company documents. Statistical tools including descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, Chi-square test, regression analysis, and ANOVA were employed using SPSS software. The findings reveal that labour utilization, productivity, wastage control, and time management significantly influence operational efficiency. Regression analysis confirms that operational variables explain 86.5% of operational efficiency outcomes (R² = 0.865), while supply chain variables explain 79.8% of organizational performance outcomes (R² = 0.798). Transportation delays, raw material shortages, and cold chain maintenance issues emerged as major operational barriers. The study concludes that integrated supply chain systems, digital transformation, cold chain modernization, and lean operational strategies are essential for improving operational sustainability and competitiveness.

Technological, Organizational, and Environmental Drivers of Supply Chain Resilience in a Regional Brown Sugar Industry: Evidence from Qiaojia, China

Regional specialty agri-food supply chains face growing risks from production shocks, logistics disruptions, market volatility, and institutional uncertainty, yet evidence on resilience in traditional smallholder-based systems remains limited. Drawing on the technology-organization-environment framework, this study investigates resilience drivers in the Qiaojia brown sugar industry in Yunnan, China. A questionnaire survey of sugarcane growers, processors, distributors, retailers, government-related stakeholders, and other stakeholders yielded 230 valid responses from 248 returns, with an effective response rate of 92.74%. Structural equation modeling examined the effects of digital technology, information sharing, collaboration capability, risk control capability, response capability, and policy and institutional support. The results show acceptable internal consistency, convergent validity, and model fit, with Cronbach’s alpha values ranging from 0.696 to 0.803 and the main fit indices meeting conventional thresholds. All six hypothesized paths were positive and statistically significant. Policy and institutional support had the strongest standardized effect on supply chain resilience (β = 0.303), followed by response capability (β = 0.287), risk control capability (β = 0.266), collaboration capability (β = 0.262), digital technology (β = 0.230), and information sharing (β = 0.187). The findings suggest that resilience depends on the combined development of digital tools, organizational capabilities, and stable institutional support.

Analysis of the Influence of Supply Chain Management on the Operational Efficiency of Capture Fisheries Business in Ambon City: Multiple Linear Regression Approach

The fisheries sector plays a vital role in Indonesia's maritime economy, yet capture fisheries enterprises in Ambon City continue to face persistent operational constraints, including limited cold-chain facilities, seasonal catch dependency, and poorly structured coordination among fishermen, collectors, and end consumers, all of which contribute to information asymmetry and suboptimal supply chain performance. This study aims to describe the current condition of supply chain management practices, assess the level of operational efficiency achieved, and examine the influence of supply chain management on operational efficiency among capture fisheries businesses in Ambon City. A quantitative associative approach was employed, involving 110 respondents selected through purposive sampling, with data analyzed using multiple linear regression after classical assumption testing confirmed normality, absence of multicollinearity, and homoscedasticity. The findings reveal that demand planning, procurement and distribution, and information integration each exert a significant and positive partial effect on operational efficiency, with demand planning demonstrating the strongest contribution (B=0.438), followed by procurement and distribution (B=0.353) and information integration (B=0.205). Simultaneously, these three dimensions explain 45.5 percent of the variance in operational efficiency (R²=0.455; F=29.53; p=0.000). These results indicate that although supply chain management awareness exists among business actors, implementation remains fragmented due to infrastructure and communication limitations. It is recommended that future research expand the sampling area, incorporate additional variables such as institutional capacity and policy support, and apply mediation or moderation approaches to deepen understanding of the underlying mechanisms.

Operational Performance and Supply Chain Risk Assessment in SME Vannamei Shrimp Farming

Small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) shrimp farms play an important role in Indonesia’s aquaculture sector; however, many continue to experience operational inefficiencies, rising production costs, and supply chain vulnerabilities that reduce profitability and long-term sustainability. Existing studies have examined individual operational challenges in aquaculture, yet few have adopted an integrated framework capable of simultaneously diagnosing performance gaps and prioritizing operational risks. This study addresses this gap by integrating the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) model and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to evaluate operational performance and supply chain risks in three vannamei shrimp farming SMEs located in Tegal, Central Java. A qualitative multiple-case study approach was employed using interviews, field observations, operational records, SCOR process mapping, and FMEA risk assessment. The findings reveal that the most significant weaknesses are concentrated in the internally focused SCOR attributes of Cost and Asset Management, while Reliability, Responsiveness, and Agility generally perform better. Farm C demonstrated the strongest overall operational performance due to disciplined operational practices, structured data management, supplier diversification, and systematic monitoring systems. FMEA analysis identified high-priority risks associated with night-time dissolved oxygen control, post-harvest turnaround delays, feed management, inventory handling, and operational data management. The integration of SCOR and FMEA provides complementary insights whereby SCOR identifies performance deficiencies while FMEA prioritizes their underlying causes. This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating the applicability of a combined SCOR–FMEA framework in aquaculture SMEs and provides practical recommendations for improving operational efficiency, supply chain resilience, and farm profitability.

Agri-food chain disruptions and sustainable performance: the role of supply chain resilience

Drawing on dynamic capability and network theory, this study examines the effect of agri-food supply chain disruptions on sustainable performance, with emphasis on the moderating role of supply chain resilience. Guided by a post-positivist paradigm, the study adopts an explanatory quantitative design. Data were collected through surveys from 245 managers of agri-food processing firms in Ghana's Greater Accra Region and analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). Demand, supply, and logistics disruptions negatively affect sustainable performance, while supply chain resilience has a significant positive effect. Resilience moderates the effects of demand and supply disruptions but not logistics disruptions. The cross-sectional design and regional focus may limit generalisability and restrict causal inference. The study integrates dynamic capability and network theory to explain resilience in disruption management and positions it as a key adaptive capability for sustainable supply chains in emerging economies.

The Influence of Green Supply Chain Management Practices on Sustainability Performance in the Sultanate of Oman Industries: The Mediating Role of Environmental Collaboration

Green supply chain management (GSCM) has become a strategic requirement for industrial firms seeking to reduce environmental harm while improving long-term sustainability performance. Despite growing interest in green procurement, eco-design, green manufacturing, and green distribution, limited empirical evidence explains how these practices are converted into sustainability performance through collaborative environmental action in the Sultanate of Oman. Guided by the Natural Resource-Based View, this study examines the effects of four GSCM practices on environmental collaboration and investigates the mediating role of environmental collaboration in the relationship between GSCM practices and sustainability performance. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted among procurement, manufacturing, logistics, and supply chain professionals working in Omani industries. From 520 questionnaires distributed, 342 valid responses were retained for analysis. The data were analyzed using Smart PLS 4.0 and partial least squares structural equation modelling. The measurement model demonstrated acceptable reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. The structural results show that eco-design, green procurement, green manufacturing, and green distribution have significant positive effects on environmental collaboration. Environmental collaboration, in turn, has a strong positive effect on sustainability performance. The indirect effects also support the mediation of the relationships between the GSCM practices and the sustainability performance, confirming the mediation chain. The results indicated that green practices are not enough; they have to be integrated with the collaboration of suppliers, customers, logistics and other functions within the company to make green practices produce results in terms of performance. The study adds to GSCM and sustainability literature by providing a relational mechanism that determines the contribution of green practices to the industrial sustainability of the Oman context.

Value chain analysis and business model development of the Rizal mango growers agriculture cooperative

Agricultural cooperatives play a critical role in improving the productivity, market access, and economic resilience of smallholder farmers. Despite their importance, many cooperatives continue to experience operational inefficiencies that limit value creation and long-term competitiveness. This study analyzed the value chain of the Rizal Mango Growers Agriculture Cooperative (RMGAC) in Rizal, Cagayan, Philippines, using Porter’s Value Chain Analysis and developed a Business Model Canvas to translate operational findings into strategic business interventions. A qualitative descriptive case study was conducted using key informant interviews, field observations, and document review. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis and organized according to Porter’s primary and support activities. The findings identified several organizational strengths, including strong institutional partnerships, collective procurement, technical assistance, and active member participation. However, constraints such as inconsistent input availability, limited adoption of recommended orchard management practices, inadequate postharvest facilities, high transportation costs, and limited value-added processing continue to reduce product quality and profitability. Based on these findings, a Business Model Canvas was developed to guide strategic improvements through strengthened partnerships, improved production and postharvest management, market diversification, infrastructure development, and value-added processing. The study demonstrates that integrating Porter’s Value Chain Analysis with the Business Model Canvas provides a practical framework for converting operational assessment into strategic business planning. This integrated approach offers a useful decision-support tool for agricultural cooperatives seeking to improve competitiveness, organizational sustainability, and value creation in smallholder farming systems.
