Breeding Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) for Resistance to Biotic and Abiotic Stress: A Critical Review of Genetic and Genomic Advances

TL;DR

The synthesis indicates that resistance to biotrophic and hemi-biotrophic constraints such as downy mildew and broomrape has been comparatively tractable through major-gene deployment, whereas resistance to necrotrophic pathogens and to abiotic stress is typically polygenic, environmentally contingent and less durable.

Abstract

Cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is grown across temperate and semi-arid regions worldwide as a principal source of vegetable oil, yet its productivity remains constrained by a shifting complex of fungal, oomycete and parasitic-weed pathogens together with recurrent drought, heat and salinity. Breeding programmes have historically addressed these constraints separately, drawing on the exceptionally wide gene pool contained in the approximately fifty wild Helianthus species native to North America. This review critically synthesises the genetic, genomic and methodological literature on sunflower breeding for biotic and abiotic stress resistance, integrating evidence on major-gene resistance to downy mildew, Sclerotinia diseases, Verticillium wilt, charcoal rot and the parasitic weed Orobanche cumana with quantitative genetic evidence on drought, salinity and combined-stress tolerance. Particular attention is given to the transition from classical interspecific introgression and marker-assisted selection towards genome-wide association mapping, genomic selection and, more recently, CRISPR/Cas9-based functional validation in hairy-root systems. Recurrent breakdown of vertical resistance, the polygenic architecture of drought and salinity tolerance, and the continued recalcitrance of sunflower to stable genetic transformation are identified as recurring sources of uncertainty across the reviewed evidence. The review further finds that single-stress breeding paradigms are increasingly incongruent with field conditions in which biotic and abiotic pressures co-occur, and it argues for a more integrated resilience-oriented breeding framework. Priority research needs include multi-environment validation of candidate genomic regions, pyramiding of resistance sources with durable and combined-stress mechanisms, and improved functional genomics infrastructure. The conclusions drawn are calibrated to the strength of the underlying evidence, distinguishing well-replicated major-gene findings from preliminary quantitative trait loci requiring independent confirmation.

Decoding the autotetraploid origin of the stress-tolerant wild beet Beta corolliflora

Most crop plants, including sugar beet (Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris), suffer from domestication bottlenecks and low genetic diversity caused by extensive selection for few traits. However, crop wild relatives (CWRs) harbour useful traits relevant for crop improvement, including enhanced adaptation to biotic and abiot...

Crop wild relatives of legumes: evolutionary resources for climate-responsive pre-breeding

Legume crops are increasingly exposed to a combination of abiotic stresses - including drought, heat, salinity and flooding - alongside mounting biotic pressures from pathogens and insect pests. Historical domestication and modern breeding practices have substantially narrowed the genetic base of cultivated legumes, co...

Breeding jassid-resistant okra (Abelmoschus esculentus): from morpho-biochemical traits to precision breeding

Okra, an economically important vegetable in tropical and subtropical regions, faces severe yield constraints due to sap-sucking pests, particularly jassids (Amrasca spp.). These insects cause hopper burn, leaf curling, and chlorosis, leading to estimated yield losses of 30-100% under severe infestation. Farmers’ heavy...

Genomics-assisted Improvement of Resistance to Insect Pests, Diseases and Nematodes in Tomato: A Critical Appraisal of Discovery, Durability and Deployment

Whether, and where, genomic technologies have altered breeding outcomes rather than merely accelerating gene discovery is examined, and the available evidence indicates that genomic resources have substantially improved the resolution of resistance discovery and the precision of marker-assisted introgression, but have...

Evaluation of Barley—Introgression Lines Between Annual Barley and the Perennial Hordeum bulbosum in a Cold-Temperate Climate

Perennial wild relatives of annual crops possess traits associated with stress tolerance, efficient nutrient uptake, and increased soil carbon sequestration. They therefore represent valuable genetic resources for developing perennial crops that may reduce environmental and climate impacts and enhance food security. We...
