Abstract
Women play a critical yet often under-recognized role in agricultural production in Nigeria,
particularly within rural communities where agriculture remains the mainstay of livelihoods.
This study examined women’s contribution to agricultural production in Safana Local
Government Area of Katsina State, Nigeria, with specific attention to the nature of their
involvement, access to productive resources, and factors influencing their productivity. A cross
sectional descriptive research design employing a mixed-methods approach was adopted.
Quantitative data were collected from 120 women farmers using a structured questionnaire,
while qualitative insights were obtained through key informant interviews with agricultural
extension officers and women group leaders. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive
statistics, chi-square tests, and multiple regression analysis, while qualitative data were
thematically analyzed to support the survey findings. The results revealed that women are
actively involved in crop production, processing, and marketing, contributing significantly to
household food security and income. However, limited access to land, credit facilities, extension
services, and decision-making power significantly constrained their productivity. Regression
results showed that access to land, credit, and extension services had a statistically significant
influence on women’s agricultural output. Qualitative evidence further highlighted socio
cultural norms and institutional barriers as major challenges affecting women’s effective
participation in agriculture. The study concludes that despite their substantial contribution,
women farmers remain structurally disadvantaged within the agricultural system. It therefore
recommends gender-responsive agricultural policies, improved access to productive resources,
and strengthened extension services to enhance women’s productivity and promote inclusive
agricultural development in Safana Local Government Area and similar rural contexts.
