Localizing Task-Based Language Teaching in Chinese EFL Classrooms: Theory, Challenges, and Practical Strategies

Abstract

Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) organizes instruction around meaning-focused tasks with clear communicative outcomes. This conceptual paper analyzes its theoretical foundations, pedagogical value, and implementation challenges in Chinese English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. TBLT can increase purposeful language use, learner engagement, interaction, and the transfer of classroom knowledge to communication. However, its effectiveness depends on task design, sequencing, scaffolding, assessment alignment, teacher expertise, class size, resources, and local learning cultures. The paper reviews core concepts such as meaning focus, outcome orientation, real-world relevance, interaction, mediation, and task complexity. It then examines constraints common in China, including exam pressure, large classes, uneven teacher preparation, limited materials, and students' unfamiliarity with open-ended participation. Practical recommendations include gradual adoption, teacher development, group-based classroom management, localized materials, needs analysis, and balanced attention to meaning and form. Three task-design examples illustrate how teachers can connect curriculum content with realistic outcomes. The paper concludes that TBLT is most effective when treated as a flexible framework rather than a fixed method.
