Abstract
Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) is a foreign language teaching approach that centers on meaningful tasks and promotes language acquisition through authentic or simulated language use. Based on a review of its theoretical underpinnings-including the Interaction Hypothesis, the Output Hypothesis, and Sociocultural Theory-this paper critically examines the application of TBLT in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. It identifies that TBLT offers notable advantages such as learner-centeredness, authenticity, and a balanced focus on accuracy and fluency, yet it also faces significant challenges in task complexity management, teacher training, exam-oriented pressure, and limited resources. To address these issues, the paper proposes practical recommendations including strengthening teacher professional development, designing graded task types (e.g., information-gap tasks, decision-making tasks, role-plays, project-based learning, and collaborative writing), aligning with local assessment systems, and promoting autonomous and cooperative learning. The paper concludes that successful TBLT implementation requires adapting its core principles to local cultural and resource conditions to maximize pedagogical effectiveness.
