Smart Automation Systems for Precision Engineering Applications
Abstract
Precision engineering is a critical manufacturing field that demands high dimensional accuracy, repeatability, productivity, and quality. With the rise of Industry 4.0, smart automation systems integrating cyber-physical systems, IIoT, machine learning, intelligent control, and real-time monitoring have transformed precision manufacturing. These technologies enable autonomous decision-making, process optimization, predictive maintenance, and improved quality control through advanced sensors, intelligent actuators, and AI-based inspection systems. This survey reviews the evolution of smart automation technologies, examines key research prior to 2018, and proposes an integrated framework combining sensor networks, intelligent controllers, data acquisition, predictive analytics, and automated feedback. The results demonstrate significant improvements in manufacturing accuracy, productivity, defect reduction, machine utilization, and overall equipment effectiveness, highlighting the importance of smart automation in future precision engineering and sustainable manufacturing systems.
