THE HUMAN–AI SYNERGY IN HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT: FROM AUTOMATION TO EMPATHY
Abstract
This paper examines the evolving human–AI synergy in Human Resources Management (HRM), arguing for a shift from automation-centric implementations toward empathy-oriented, augmentative systems. Building on multidisciplinary sources from management, psychology, and information systems, we synthesize current theories and evidence around the opportunities and risks of AI adoption in HR. Empirically, we present an exploratory survey conducted in 2025 among 52 HR professionals in Romania (SMEs and large organizations), assessing perceived efficiency gains, fairness, transparency, trust, and impact on employee experience. Results indicate that 71% of respondents report operational efficiency gains, while 58% express concerns about bias and 63% emphasize the need for explainability to build trust. Regression analyses suggest that perceived explainability significantly predicts trust, which in turn predicts adoption intent. We propose a practical Human–AI Partnership Framework for HR that integrates transparency-by-design, participatory governance, and empathy-informed decision rules. The study contributes to the literature by grounding ethical and experiential claims in early evidence from a dynamic, underresearched context. We conclude that AI’s transformative potential in HR hinges not on replacing human judgment but on amplifying it—turning AI from a tool of automation into an ally for human dignity and inclusion at work.
