Findings show that Canva is widely used for visual learning and content creation in language, social studies and science subjects, but equitable access and teacher readiness are essential for its effective technology integration.

Abstract

The growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has drawn attention to digital learning tools that support creativity and effective teaching. Canva is originally a graphic design platform that evolved into an AI-assisted education tool. This study conducted a systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines and the SPIDER framework to explore Canva’s role in secondary education, focusing on its uses, benefits and challenges. From 1,725 initial records, 15 peer-reviewed studies ,lastly from Indonesia and a few from Malaysia met the inclusion criteria. Findings show that Canva is widely used for visual learning and content creation in language, social studies and science subjects. It enhances student motivation, comprehension, creativity, improves writing and digital literacy. However, its classroom use remains short-term and teacher-centered , with limited focus on science and higher-order thinking. Reported challenges include low digital literacy, poor infrastructure and insufficient teacher training. Overall, Canva is a flexible platform that supports 21st-century learning, but equitable access and teacher readiness are essential for its effective technology integration.
