Abstract

Foundations of Simultaneous Interpreting: For EFL University Students introduces simultaneous interpreting for Arabic-speaking undergraduates across the Arab world. Original English-to-Arabic and Arabic-to-English examples connect oral performance with accurate meaning, context, and responsibility. The course assumes developed listening and speaking in both working languages and introductory translation or interpreting knowledge, with task difficulty adapted to demonstrated language readiness. Fifteen chapters develop understanding of interpreting modes, directionality, active listening, speech analysis, oral reformulation, simultaneous coordination, preparation and terminology, segmentation and ear–voice span, Arabic–English syntax and anticipation, coping and recovery, numerical and factual precision, register and variation, speech formats, booth teamwork, remote interpreting, and quality assessment. Clear explanations, worked bilingual examples, guided activities, five practice tasks per chapter, quizzes, and explained answers support source-based evaluation and focused practice. Chapter outcomes, roadmaps, and infographics organize learning. Instructor- or peer-read scripts can support oral tasks, and recordings require appropriate consent. A proposed 42-contact-hour plan sits within a flexible 35–45-hour course. The textbook provides a foundation for further supervised training and belongs to the Translation Studies branch of English Language Studies for EFL University Students. ChatGPT Images generated the creative cover and learning illustrations, including illustrations used in the 32 roadmaps and infographics; exact wording, labels, tables, and QR codes were prepared separately. The Project Director, Munassir Alhamami, is responsible for the final editorial decisions and released version.
