From waste to ethnopharmacological development: the potential of bioactive compounds from brazilian cultivars of Mangifera indica L.
Abstract
Mangifera indica L., commonly known as mango, stands out not only for its nutritional value, but also for the great potential of its by-products, such as peels and seeds, which are often discarded. This review article discusses the phytochemical composition of different Brazilian cultivars of the fruit, addressing aspects related to the variability of bioactive compounds according to the extraction method, peel processing, solvent, and cultivar analyzed. These initiatives add economic value to the agro-industrial sector and reinforce sustainable practices by promoting the reuse of waste, aligning with the principles of the circular economy. Furthermore, reutilizing these by-products is a strategic step towards sustainability. Thus, the bioactive compounds present in M. indica have significant potential for developing innovative, environmentally responsible solutions.
