Small Firm, Smart Machines
Abstract
Book 3 of the Power and Responsibility in the Age of AI series. Small and medium-sized firms make up more than 99 per cent of businesses, yet they are adopting AI more slowly than large ones, and the gap is widening. This book is a practical guide for the owners, managing directors and managers who run them. It explains what small firms lack and what they have, what AI can and cannot do for them and the barriers that really hold them back, then sets out START, a five-step method: spot the right task, test small, assess the value with one honest number, roll out without breaking things and track and govern on a small budget. Every chapter ends with key points for leaders and a short exercise, and an appendix turns START into a checklist. The Power and Responsibility in the Age of AI series examines the choices organisations make when they put artificial intelligence to work. Book 1 asks what AI consumes: the electricity, water, materials and grid capacity behind every prompt. Book 2 asks what AI is allowed to do, and who answers for it when AI agents act on our behalf. Book 3 asks how the businesses that make up most of the economy, the small and medium-sized firms without specialist teams or large budgets, can put AI to work well. Each book stands alone, and together they offer leaders a complete view of the costs, responsibilities and opportunities that come with AI. About the author.
