GROWING OYSTER MUSHROOMS: A STARTER GUIDE FOR FIRST-TIME GROWERS

Oct 2026 · Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)
Fungal Biology and Applications

Abstract

A short, free introductory guide to growing oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus spp.) for first-time and small-scale growers. The guide teaches the shape of the craft rather than a recipe: what the oyster mushroom is and why it is a forgiving first crop; the two phases of cultivation — colonisation and fruiting — that organise everything a grower does; the six needs (food, moisture, mild temperatures, fresh air, light and hygiene); the cultivation cycle from substrate preparation to harvest; the mistakes almost every beginner makes; post-harvest handling and drying; and the record-keeping habit that separates growers from amateurs. It is deliberately light on figures. A number without its context is a trap in cultivation — the right temperature for one variety is the wrong one for another — so the guide explains why figures matter before it offers any, and the few indicative anchors it does give are labelled as orientation rather than protocol. It is written to be read in an evening. No primary experimental data are reported. The photographs are the author's own cultivation records, together with a small number of AI-generated illustrations for steps the author had not photographed; each AI-generated image is labelled in its caption. The guidance is general information, not professional advice. This guide is the practical companion to the author's narrative review of the published literature on the subject: Rathore, S. (2026). Cultivation of Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus spp.) in Hot Semi-Arid Regions: A Narrative Review. Preprint. (https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.7587518).Free to read and share; not for resale. First edition, October 2026.
