Abstract

Protein Quest: An Interactive Biochemistry Learning Challenge Description Protein Quest is an interactive, game-based educational resource designed to support undergraduate biochemistry education, particularly for students in medical, health sciences, and life sciences programs. The learning activity reinforces fundamental concepts of amino acid chemistry, peptide bond formation, protein structure, molecular interactions, and protein function. It integrates basic biochemical principles with clinically relevant examples to encourage students to connect molecular mechanisms with physiological processes and human disease. The resource features 12 interactive multiple-choice questions, immediate feedback, explanatory comments, and a point-based scoring system. Its gamified format is intended to promote active participation, self-assessment, and student engagement during lectures, seminars, and independent study. Learning objectives Upon completing the activity, students should be able to: Identify the fundamental structural and chemical properties of amino acids. Explain peptide bond formation and the different levels of protein organization. Recognize the molecular interactions responsible for protein stability and folding. Relate alterations in protein structure or amino acid metabolism to selected clinical conditions, including sickle cell disease and phenylketonuria. Apply basic biochemical knowledge to clinically oriented questions. Educational application The quiz can be used as a formative assessment tool, an interactive classroom activity, or a supplementary resource for independent learning. It is designed for browser-based use on computers, tablets, and smartphones, without requiring specialized software. The archived package contains the interactive HTML application, documentation, and descriptive metadata. Public web hosting is required to provide direct browser access through a permanent online quiz link or QR code.
