Micro-ROV tethered to HOV for deep-sea observation: design, implementation and experimental validation

Abstract

Human-occupied vehicles (HOVs), constrained by substantial volume and weight, encounter significant challenges in exploring complex seabed terrains, such as rugged seabed and confined operational spaces. To compensate for the limitations of HOV, a micro-observation-class remotely operated vehicle (ROV) tethered to the HOV Shen Hai Yong Shi was developed to enhance HOV’s exploration capability in complex seabed terrains. This paper, for the first time, presents an overall design of the functions and composition of the deep-sea micro-observation-class ROV system. In the design of the micro ROV mechanical, electrical and control systems, the payload space, weight and energy constraints of the HOV are considered. A power supply and communication scheme is designed for the ROV from the mother HOV via an optoelectronic composite umbilical cable. This scheme provides sufficient weight margins and spatial allocation for the thrusters and detection sensors, thereby significantly optimising the ROV's performance in terms of lightweighting and motion maneuverability. The design concept of the micro-observation-class ROV, mounted on the HOV Shen Hai Yong Shi, has been comprehensively validated during a sea trial at a depth of 1,380 m.

Design and Implementation of a Ship–Shore Cooperative Experimental Platform for Unmanned Surface Vehicles

Transferring unmanned surface vehicle (USV) algorithms from simulation to physical vessels is constrained by heterogeneous hardware interfaces, degraded wireless links, and ambiguous boundaries between human and autonomous control. This study designs and implements a ship–shore cooperative experimental platform compris...

Evaluation of the Mines Lunar Surface Simulator as a Viable Testing Ground for Human Factors Assessments of Rover Teleoperations

As extraterrestrial rovers transition from scientific exploration to multi-agent infrastructure development and in-situ resource utilization (ISRU), human operators are shifting from direct teleoperation to supervisory roles. While high-fidelity analog testbeds exist to capture equipment data, they are underutilized fo...

Research Progress on Short-Time Auxiliary Propulsion Technology for Micro Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Micro unmanned aerial vehicles extend aerial sensing into spaces that are too small, dangerous or improvised for conventional aircraft. Their most vulnerable phase, however, is often the initial seconds of flight. Limited wing area, low-Reynolds-number aerodynamics and strict mass budgets make it difficult to combine e...

Underwater Platform for Long-Term Observation Using a Cable-Restricted Underwater Vehicle and Its Design Concept for Trajectory Planning

Long-term and repeated observation of shallow seafloor environments is required to evaluate temporal changes in seagrass meadows and other coastal ecosystems. In this study, we propose a cable-restricted observation system consisting of an underwater vehicle, a tether cable, and a seafloor station equipped with a reel....

Dvirupa: A Dual-Mode Planetary Rover Integrating Autonomous Exploration and Crewed Mobility

Introduction: Extraterrestrial surface exploration faces severe logistical constraints; primarily high payload launches costs and operational downtime driven by crew fatigue. Traditional planetary exploration missions separate crewed mobility (such as lunar electric rovers) from unmanned robotic science platform creati...
