Abstract

Rapid urbanization, industrialization, and population growth have led to a significant rise in wastewater and solid waste generation, posing critical environmental and public health challenges worldwide. Conventional waste management systems, largely designed for disposal, are no longer sufficient to meet the demands of sustainability and resource efficiency. Addressing these challenges requires a transition toward integrated, technology-driven, and circular approaches that prioritize resource recovery, environmental protection, and system resilience. Advanced Technologies for Sustainable and Effective Waste Management Systems provides a comprehensive overview of emerging innovations and strategies transforming the field. This edited volume brings together interdisciplinary contributions from global experts, covering smart wastewater management, advanced treatment technologies, resource recovery, and nature-based solutions such as phytoremediation. It further explores cutting-edge developments in data analytics, digitalization, artificial intelligence, and decision-support systems, including federated learning and edge AI applications in smart city contexts. In addition to technological advancements, the book examines policy frameworks, governance models, and global case studies to address implementation challenges and future directions. The integration of remote sensing and GIS-based approaches for waste management planning further highlights the role of spatial technologies in informed decision-making. This book is designed for researchers, postgraduate students, environmental engineers, policymakers, and practitioners engaged in environmental science, water resource management, and sustainable infrastructure development. It serves as a valuable reference for advancing innovative, efficient, and sustainable waste management systems.
