Abstract

The rapid convergence of virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) has resulted in a redefined ethical framework for digital interaction. As AI‐driven avatars gain cognitive and emotional autonomy, they transition from passive representations to active participants capable of shaping moral reasoning, social behavior, and value construction. The present study explores the ethical transformations that are emerging from this integration, focusing on how human‐machine interaction reconfigures traditional concepts of responsibility, agency, and moral judgment. By employing a systematic and thematic analysis of the extant literature, the research identifies key trends such as the shift from user‐centred ethics towards distributed and relational ethical systems embedded within technological frameworks. The findings indicate that immersive environments exert a significant influence on users' empathy and moral sensitivity, concomitantly giving rise to novel dilemmas pertaining to authenticity, consent, and algorithmic accountability. The study posits that the evolution from human–avatar symbiosis to AI–avatar autonomy signifies a fundamental transformation in the nature of ethical engagement within virtual ecosystems. These insights emphasize the necessity for inclusive, transparent, and value‐sensitive approaches to guide the design and governance of future AI‐integrated VR environments.

Social participation and epistemic autonomy in extended reality learning

This paper develops a normative account of the metaverse as a hybrid and pedagogically relevant form of Extended Reality (XR), thereby foregrounding the social, cognitive, and collaborative dynamics that shape virtual learning environments. Instead of locating its educational value in mere immersive simulation, the paper argues that the metaverse’s normative didactic potential lies in its capacity to enable equitable participation, distributed cognition, and cross-border interaction among diverse learners. Addressing contemporary challenges—such as algorithmic personalization, filter bubbles, commercial biases, and avatar-mediated identity formation—the paper develops a normative framework for designing XR learning spaces that support epistemic autonomy while ensuring accessibility, inclusivity, and psychological safety. A special focus is on avatars as embodied interfaces that promote representation, interaction, and collective knowledge building. The paper concludes by outlining design principles for socially responsible XR environments that promote didactic participation across varied educational contexts.

Assembling Engagement With Autonomy and Language ‐ A Neuroscientific Case Study With Digital Companions

This study addresses the need to understand human engagement with empathic Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) digital companions (DC), as these systems increasingly fulfil social and emotional roles in daily life. Motivated by the rapid adoption of DC technologies and their potential to reshape human–AI relationships, the study applies Assemblage Theory to explore DC within broader socio‐material systems. Through a mixed‐methods design, 40 participants interacted with a Carl Sagan‐inspired avatar while biometric and qualitative data were collected to map engagement dynamics. Results show that greater user autonomy and participatory linguistic styles significantly enhance engagement, whereas authoritative language reduces it. Findings reveal how context, agency, and language shape bonds between humans and AI, emphasizing the importance of designing DCs that empower users and create authentic connections. This research advances theoretical and practical understanding of devices that promise to transform future social interactions.

Artificial Intelligence and the Rise of Digital Empathy: Transforming Well-Being in Modern Workplaces

This paper examines the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in supporting employee well-being through mechanisms of digital empathy. Drawing on qualitative case studies of two global organisations deploying AI-based emotional support systems, the research investigates how employees interpret and interact with these technologies. The study is guided by three core questions: How is empathy simulated through AI in workplace settings? How do employees perceive and experience these systems? What ethical and relational dynamics shape their implementation and impact? A qualitative multi-case design was adopted, utilising semi-structured interviews with HR professionals and end users (n=22) and document analysis of platform architecture and language models. Findings reveal that while AI systems can provide emotionally responsive feedback, users remain ambivalent about their authenticity and ethical use. Participants valued the immediacy and privacy of AI-based tools but highlighted limitations in nuance, trust, and cultural fit. Drawing on emotional labour theory and self-determination theory, the paper argues that digital empathy is best conceptualised as a relational interface that complements—rather than replaces—human connection. Organisations must embed these tools within cultures of psychological safety and ethical transparency. The study recommends participatory co-design of well-being technologies and hybrid models of care that preserve emotional authenticity. These insights contribute to emerging debates on AI, care work, and the transformation of human resource management in the algorithmic age.

The Interplay of Gender and Anthropomorphism in AI Avatar Design: An Empirical Study on User Experience in Financial Contexts

The design of AI virtual assistant (AVA) avatars significantly shapes user perceptions and experience. However, the interplay between avatar gender, anthropomorphism, and contextual task demands remains underexplored, particularly in specific cultural settings. Grounded in the Computers Are Social Actors (CASA) paradigm and Social Role Theory, this study investigates how these two key design attributes influence user experience within the financial service context of Hong Kong. We conducted an exploratory mixed-methods experiment employing a 2 (avatar gender: male vs. female) × 4 (anthropomorphism level: none, low, medium, high) design. Fourteen participants interacted with a series of avatar conditions while completing standardized financial tasks, followed by in-depth semi-structured interviews. Quantitative results, interpreted with caution due to the small sample size, indicated no statistically significant effect of avatar gender on perceived trust, emotional engagement, or anthropomorphism. Qualitative thematic analysis revealed three core insights: (1) a strong context-dependency of user preferences, where professional settings prioritize functionality and moderated anthropomorphism, while entertainment contexts favor expressive and customizable avatars; (2) a complex relationship with anthropomorphism, where moderate levels foster trust and approachability, whereas high realism can induce discomfort or psychological distance; and (3) a prevailing neutral stance toward avatar gender in task-oriented financial interactions, though underlying cultural stereotypes still persist. The study contributes by providing nuanced and context-sensitive evidence that explores the applicability of gender in professional AVA design and clarifies the boundary conditions of anthropomorphism's benefits.
